The guide is the evening. Almost every five-star review names a person — Shinya, Kaz, Ro, Shino, Karen, Mia, Jasmine, Richard, Chika, Rika, Jimmy. The lower-rated ones almost always name a guide who was new or disengaged, which is a staffing question rather than a route question.

Night is the point. Reviewers on four different walks make the same observation independently: the same streets in the evening are emptier, cooler and better to photograph than they are at midday.

Group size decides how much you hear. The walks capped at six to ten draw no complaints about audibility. The one capped at twenty-five draws them repeatedly, because it carries no headsets.

Nobody can promise you a geiko. Sightings come up often and so do blanks, sometimes in consecutive reviews of the same walk. One operator states outright that meeting a geisha is not what its tour is for.
