What travellers say about the Gion night walks
★★★★★
Shinya took us down streets I would never have found on my own, and kept the stories coming the whole way. Walking Gion after dark rather than in the middle of the day was the thing that made it.
Nellie · August 2026
Kyoto Night walking tour in Gion · Thirteen stops in two hours★★★★★
It was just my husband and me on the tour with Luca, which felt like a private walk for the price of a group one. Two hours of temples, photo stops and geisha history, and we came away knowing far more than we arrived with.
Lesley · Couple · August 2026
Kyoto Night walking tour in Gion · Thirteen stops in two hours★★★★★
It rained for most of the evening and Kaz answered every question anyway. I would rate the patience above the weather, and the wet streets photographed beautifully.
Marta · August 2026
Kyoto Night walking tour in Gion · Thirteen stops in two hours★★★★★
Ro checked in on everybody as the group moved and told us where we were up to at each stage. He finished by recommending somewhere to eat afterwards, which we took him up on.
Hunter · August 2026
Kyoto Night walking tour in Gion · Thirteen stops in two hours★★★★★
Shingo took us round Yasaka Shrine, through Hanamikoji, past Yasui Kompira-gu and on towards the Yasaka Pagoda. We hit golden hour almost exactly, which made the photographs.
Karla W. · July 2026
Kyoto Night walking tour in Gion · Three hours, Hanamikoji and Yasaka Shrine★★★☆☆
We covered a lot of ground in three hours, but the group was much bigger than I expected and there are no headsets. Only the three or four people nearest the guide could hear him, and I ended up looking places up on my phone.
Cindi L. · June 2026
Kyoto Night walking tour in Gion · Three hours, Hanamikoji and Yasaka Shrine★★★☆☆
Our guide was good, but it poured and the tour ran anyway. If heavy rain is forecast for your date I would move it rather than walk three hours in it.
Aaron B. · May 2026
Kyoto Night walking tour in Gion · Three hours, Hanamikoji and Yasaka Shrine★★★★★
Raphael explained the districts, the shrines and the rituals at each one properly. Doing it at night meant the streets were far emptier than they are by day.
Keiran C. · April 2026
Kyoto Night walking tour in Gion · Three hours, Hanamikoji and Yasaka Shrine★★★★★
Mia knew several of the women we passed by name and taught us to be respectful about it. She explained how a teahouse actually works, the training, the house mothers, all of it.
Craig P. · October 2024
Kyoto Night walking tour in Gion · Two hours from the Gion Omoide Museum★★★★☆
Seven of us friends went and the guide was funny and very well informed. Our only complaint was the group size, which felt larger than the stated maximum, and in hindsight we would have booked the smaller-group version.
Joanne C. · Friends · October 2024
Kyoto Night walking tour in Gion · Two hours from the Gion Omoide Museum★★★★★
I was the only booking that night, so it became a private walk. My guide was knowledgeable and made two hours go quickly.
Patricia T. · Solo · December 2025
Kyoto Night walking tour in Gion · Two hours from the Gion Omoide Museum★★★★★
Fewer crowds, a more honest atmosphere and a guide who did not just explain things but brought them to life. Richard is the most knowledgeable guide we have had anywhere.
Edgardo R. · April 2026
Kyoto Night walking tour in Gion · Twelve stops, capped at ten★★★★★
A lot of walking and worth every step. We did not see a single geisha, and it was still one of the best evenings of the trip.
Diane S. · May 2026
Kyoto Night walking tour in Gion · Twelve stops, capped at ten★★★★★
It moves from geisha specifics into Kyoto and Japanese history without a jolt. Even our teenagers were not bored, which is the real test.
Grigory A. · Family · April 2026
Kyoto Night walking tour in Gion · Twelve stops, capped at ten★★★★★
Shino showed us corners of the district we would never have turned into and was patient with every request. It was one of the best evenings of our whole trip to Japan.
Iris · September 2026
Kyoto Night walking tour in Gion · A hundred minutes, capped at ten★★★★★
Karen answered everything and spent real time getting good photographs of us. Walking the streets at night was also far more bearable than the daytime heat.
Kirsten · September 2026
Kyoto Night walking tour in Gion · A hundred minutes, capped at tenWhat travellers say about the food and drink evenings
★★★★★
There were seven of us aged fourteen to eighty-five and everybody was fed and happy. Jimmy took us to places we would never have walked into on our own, and the sake tasting is the part we still talk about.
Sophie R. · Family · January 2026
Kyoto Night foodie tour in Gion · Nine dishes and three sake tastings★★★★★
Rika walked us through quiet back streets between restaurants and explained every course as it came. It was the part of Kyoto you do not find by wandering.
Melissa J. · March 2026
Kyoto Night foodie tour in Gion · Nine dishes and three sake tastings★★★★☆
Two eateries with small plates and drinks, a sake option in the middle, and dessert or a drink at the third stop. Our guide was friendly and threw in some background on the two geisha districts we ate in.
Liz F. · March 2026
Kyoto Night foodie tour in Gion · Nine dishes and three sake tastings★☆☆☆☆
I felt misled by the word premium. The guide was pleasant, but the first restaurant handed us a menu printed for tour groups and the food was ordinary, and I do not think the evening was worth what it cost.
Lucas B. · August 2026
Kyoto Night foodie tour in Gion · Nine dishes and three sake tastings★★★★★
We spent the evening in back alleys we could not have found, trying dishes we loved and a couple we did not. That is the point of the thing, and I came away converted to the Japanese highball.
Jim M. · October 2024
Kyoto Night bar hopping tour in Pontocho · Three izakaya, you buy your own★★★★★
A brilliant night out and genuinely easy as a solo traveller. The karaoke bar at the end was the highlight.
Lauren H. · Solo · March 2026
Kyoto Night bar hopping tour in Pontocho · Three izakaya, you buy your own★★★★★
I was the only person booked on a Monday and Ataru ran it anyway. He walked me through the neighbourhoods, told me the local history and picked three stops I could not have found by myself.
Christian E. · October 2024
Kyoto Night bar hopping tour in Pontocho · Three izakaya, you buy your own★★☆☆☆
The drinks were fine and the karaoke was fun, but I have eaten better from street vendors. I would not book it for the food.
Matthew K. · April 2025
Kyoto Night bar hopping tour in Pontocho · Three izakaya, you buy your own★★★★★
A dozen dishes over the evening and nobody in a group of eight went home hungry. Chika walked us through Nishiki before it shut and explained what we were not eating as well as what we were.
Paul K. · April 2026
Kyoto Night foodie tour · Nishiki Market, then three izakaya★★★★★
Chikako took our family of four to three izakaya we would never have found, and taught us about sake along the way. She answered every question our teenager could produce.
Michael R. · Family · August 2026
Kyoto Night foodie tour · Nishiki Market, then three izakaya★★★★☆
Good food, a small restaurant and a knowledgeable guide. Meeting other travellers over sake was half of what made the night.
Yvette W. · March 2026
Kyoto Night foodie tour · Nishiki Market, then three izakaya★★★★★
The walk beforehand pointed out things we would never have noticed, including the school timetable posted up in the district. Then dinner, and an hour and a half with a maiko who sang, played games and answered everything we asked.
Beverlie C. · November 2025
Kyoto Night dinner in Gion · A course meal with a maiko★★★★★
Two songs, games, plenty of time to ask questions, and food that was genuinely good. Josh translated throughout and explained what we were watching.
Christopher B. · April 2026
Kyoto Night dinner in Gion · A course meal with a maiko★★★★★
The short Gion walk at the start gave the dinner its context, which I had not expected from the description. Our guide was an excellent host and interpreter.
Chris M. · Couple · June 2026
Kyoto Night dinner in Gion · A course meal with a maiko★★★★★
It is not only eating, and the walking is gentle rather than a trek. I told Martin I do not eat meat and he ordered around it without any fuss.
Clifford H. · June 2026
Kyoto Night foodie tour in Gion · Ten tastings, capped at six★★★★★
Shrines and temples at night first, then traditional dishes and drinks at two restaurants. We finished the evening actually understanding the atmosphere of the place.
Greg L. · January 2026
Kyoto Night foodie tour in Gion · Ten tastings, capped at sixWhat travellers say about the walks outside the centre
★★★★★
Every other visitor had gone by the time we reached the bamboo, so the grove was ours. I wanted to sit down in it and had to keep walking, which tells you how good it was.
Suzanne L. · April 2026
Kyoto Night walking tour in Arashiyama · The bamboo grove, unlit★★★★★
The bamboo without crowds and under a moon is a completely different place from the one in the photographs. Caleb and Aaron told the stories properly rather than rushing them, and none of it felt like a haunted house.
Laura G. · December 2025
Kyoto Night walking tour in Arashiyama · The bamboo grove, unlit★★★★★
Wear proper shoes. It is a hike, and the surface goes from asphalt to gravel to dirt, so it is uneven in the dark.
Errin E. · July 2026
Kyoto Night walking tour in Arashiyama · The bamboo grove, unlit★★★☆☆
The stories were interesting but the pace sagged towards the end, with a fair amount of standing about. You also cannot see much of a forest in the dark, and torches are not allowed, so manage your expectations on that.
Philip K. · January 2026
Kyoto Night walking tour in Arashiyama · The bamboo grove, unlit★★★★★
This is not a jump-scare ghost tour, it is local lore about real events, and our guide handled the darker material carefully. That suited my group exactly.
Madelyn L. · October 2025
Kyoto Night walking tour in Arashiyama · The bamboo grove, unlit★★★★★
Extremely well organised, and the shrine at night is a different place from the one in everybody's photographs. There was almost nobody else on the path.
Tammy L. · July 2026
Kyoto Night walking tour at Fushimi Inari · Up to two hours on the torii path
What travellers consistently say
The guide is the evening. Almost every five-star review names a
person — Shinya, Kaz, Ro, Shino, Karen, Mia, Jasmine, Richard, Chika, Rika, Jimmy.
The lower-rated ones almost always name a guide who was new or disengaged, which is a
staffing question rather than a route question.
Night is the point. Reviewers on four different walks make the same
observation independently: the same streets in the evening are emptier, cooler and better
to photograph than they are at midday.
Group size decides how much you hear. The walks capped at six to ten
draw no complaints about audibility. The one capped at twenty-five draws them repeatedly,
because it carries no headsets.
Nobody can promise you a geiko. Sightings come up often and so do
blanks, sometimes in consecutive reviews of the same walk. One operator states outright
that meeting a geisha is not what its tour is for.
