Two to three and a half hours on foot through Gion and up into Higashiyama, with a guide and nothing else included. No transport, no food, no admission — because none of the places these walks visit charges admission or closes.
The routes overlap heavily. All five cover Hanamikoji, most take in Yasaka Shrine and the floodlit Yasaka Pagoda, and three finish near Pontocho. What differs is the group cap, the pace and the fare.
Hanamikoji at two in the afternoon carries a coach party. At seven in the evening it carries residents and a handful of walkers, and the lanes north of Shijo are close to empty.
Machiya frontages are dark timber with paper screens behind them. In daylight they read as brown wood; after dark they glow, which is the picture everybody came for.
Roughly half past five to half past six is when they move between appointments. Nobody can promise a sighting, and this is when it is possible at all.
Kyoto reaches the high thirties in July and August with heavy humidity. The evening is several degrees down on the afternoon and it is the only comfortable time to walk in summer.
The other thing most readers are choosing between. A walk buys you the district; a food tour buys the district and dinner. The price gap looks larger than it is, because after a walk you still have to eat.

Start times: five to half past five, with departures set to hit the half hour after sunset. Since sunset moves from 16:45 in December to 19:15 in July, take the earliest slot in winter and the latest in summer.
Booking window: a few days outside early April and late November, and weeks inside them. Almost all refund in full at twenty-four hours, so booking early is close to free.
Group cap: the number to check. Six to ten is a conversation; twenty-five on a public street with no headsets is not, and reviewers of that departure say so.
Book something else if you have already walked Gion. Five evenings covering the same district at the same length is a lot of overlap, and a second night is better spent elsewhere: the Arashiyama ghost walk goes forty minutes west and ends in an unlit bamboo grove, and the Fushimi Inari walk goes eight minutes south to a mountain of torii with nobody on it.
