Three or four sittings across one evening, in rooms you would not have found, with somebody who orders. That is the whole product. Kyoto's evening food happens behind unmarked doors, up staircases with a single small sign, in spaces that seat eight, and almost none of it carries an English menu.
The evenings here run three and a half hours and start between five and half past six. Two of them include a full dinner course with dessert; one includes ten or more tastings; one is a bar crawl where the guide picks the rooms and you buy what you drink; and one is a course meal with a maiko at the table.
Pontocho is five hundred metres of alley with restaurants on both sides and no way to tell from the street which of them will seat two foreigners at seven o'clock. A guide has the booking.
Caps here run from six to eight, because you are being seated at tables rather than led down a street. That is a different evening from a departure of twenty-five.
Two of these include sake, and one includes a three-part tasting with your guide explaining what you are drinking. Sake is the thing most visitors want to understand and have no way into.
Where to eat, what to order, what to drink and whether they will seat you are all handled before you arrive. On a single evening in an unfamiliar city that is worth more than it sounds.
This is the comparison most people are actually making, and the headline prices overstate the gap. A $22 walk plus dinner in Pontocho with a drink comes to roughly $50 to $75 for the evening. A food tour at $95 to $128 includes the meal.

So the real difference is thirty to fifty dollars, and what it buys is access rather than food. If you would happily walk into a Kyoto izakaya with a translation app, take the walk. If that is the part of the evening you dread, this is what the money is for.

Not included on the bar crawl: the food and drink themselves. The guide picks three izakaya, orders and translates; you order at least one item and one drink at each stop and pay for them. Bring cash, because the bill is split at the first two venues and the third works on cash delivery.
Not included anywhere: hotel pick-up. Every one of these meets at a named point, and the map lists them.

Booking window: further ahead than the walks. These are the smallest departures in the city and the operators publish average lead times of twenty-nine to sixty-eight days. A week is usually enough outside early April and late November.
Dietary requests: a day ahead at the latest on the premium evening, a week on the Ninja food tour. Vegan and gluten-free cannot be accommodated on one of them at all, which it says plainly.
Book a walking tour instead if what you want is the district rather than the dinner. These evenings spend most of their length sitting down, which is the point, and if you came to Kyoto to walk lantern-lit streets you will see less of them here than on a two-hour Gion walk. Book something else too if you are travelling with young children. The bar crawl is twenty and over, the maiko dinner is fifteen and over with no exceptions, and only one of these five takes a stroller. And if the budget is tight, the honest answer is that Kyoto's izakaya are open to anyone with a translation app and some patience — the channel question takes that seriously.
